Media training.
The producer from Dragon’s Den taught us about setting up a video shorts unit at the OCC (Ordsall Community Cafe)!

I am loving the dragons den training. Already the links with the people I met there have involved them coming on our radio show and promoting their causes, plus, the ways to sell ourselves and causes etc , have been real eyeopeners . I have done a lot of reassessing since Tuesday. Thankyou
Jane Wood (Salford City Radio, Salford Lids and Ordsall community Reporters.)
Anabelle came along to help set up a short video unit at the OCC. I came along, and there were so many people there!
Not just spectators, but people with ideas, wanting to get involved! Next week they will all get their chance to shoot video.
That is the problem – Anabelle has learned that I like making videos for Y-tube! So I will get all the footage, but will then be expected to edit it down to 3 minutes.
It will not be about venture capital stuff, but what the BBC is all about: Engaging wit the local community.
I am excited by all the ideas! To learn about everything going on locally. The OCC looks like it is going to be a social focus.
So it is right that we will be making video shorts from there: 3 minute videos on what is going off in the local community.
It looks like such a unit will be very busy, as all the local people are very creative. Watch this space!

Week 2 and we all sat there wondering what was in store. Annabelle told us about how to PITCH an idea or a group. USP came into action, what was that? I thought. Unique Selling Point, wow! what a start, we all took turns in delivering our own patter including our USP for each or our groups. Suddenly the whole room began to buzz, our drive and enthusiasm came alive. Annabelle knew this and moved straight into our film story - now it was electric how the ideas came flowing and we suddenly all had jobs for next week. we had a script writer, production manager, props organiser, camera crew, song writer and editors Fantastic. Cant wait till next week.

Whenever I visit Ordsall Community Cafe the conversation usually turns to the Salford Lads Club, which is situated on Coronation Street just around the corner.
For me the club is famous as it featured on the inner sleeve of The Smiths “The Queen is Dead” album.

The Smiths famously posed in front of Salford Lads Club for the inner sleeve of The Queen Is Dead; this is one of the other photos from that session. From left to right: Johnny Marr, Morrissey, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce.
The club, and the back streets of Ordsall, were used as the setting for the video of The Smiths “Stop Me If You’ve Heard This One Before” which was due to be a single taken from the album “Strangeways Here We Come”.
However when plans to release the single were shelved a re-edited version appeared as the video for ” I Started Something I couldn’t Finish”.
David Cameron, leader of the Conservative Party, is a “apparently” a fan of The Smiths and on a recent visit to Salford Lads Club visited the Smiths Room.
Another surprising note is that the club, along with the tagline “Some jobs are bigger than others” (a reference to the “Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others” track which appeared as the closing track on “The Queen Is Dead” album), was used as part of a recruitment campaign for private health care company BUPA.

Despite the terrible weather (it was pouring and I’d got drenched cycling into work!) over ten people turned up at Ordsall Community Cafe to meet Annabelle Waller from the BBC.
Graeme Bates, from MCIN, who has been working at Ordsall Community Cafe for the past year and a half gave a welcome and introduction to the computer room downstairs. Here Graeme offers sessions covering basic skills and multimedia within the centre.
David Kay, also from MCIN, then gave a brief overview of the Community Reporters project and of MCIN’s partnership working with the BBC.
David then introduced Annabelle who talked about her work at the BBC.
Then the group introduced themselves highlighting a wide range of skills. There were representatives from a number of community groups but also people with an interest or background in a diverse variety of areas including creative writing, poetry, blogging, community radio, theatre and video.
The group discussed what they would like to make a video about and a number of ideas were raised.
This will be discussed in detail at the first session next week.
Keep an eye on this blog as each week the group will be adding updates on what was covered in each session and at the end of the four weeks we’ll be posting our finished video online.
